The Small Business Center‘s primary focus is to help increase small business retention rates in Dekalb County. Nearly 700 thousand small businesses are started each year, yet approximately 50% of these businesses fail in less than four years1.  Community growth is largely dependent on the retention and growth of local businesses. Therefore, it is important to monitor the health and expectations of these existing businesses and to understand the root causes that adversely impact their growth. How important are small businesses?2:

Small Businesses:

  • Represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms
  • Employ about half of all private sector employees
  • Pay nearly 45 percent of total U.S. private payroll
  • Have generated 60 to 80 percent of net new
    jobs annually over the last decade
  • Create more than half of non-farm private
    gross domestic product
  • Hire 40 percent of high tech workers
    (such as scientists, engineers, and computer workers)
  • Are 52 percent home-based and 2 percent franchises
